Empowering your Electrical Installation
1. Assessment: Begin by assessing your current electrical setup. Identify any outdated or overloaded circuits, damaged wiring, or insufficient outlets. Consider consulting with a licensed electrician for a thorough evaluation.
2. Upgrading: If your home has an older electrical system, consider upgrading it to meet modern safety standards. This upgrade, which might involve replacing outdated wiring, upgrading the electrical panel, or installing ground fault circuit protector (RCD) Residual Circuit Breaker in appropriate areas, not only ensures your safety but also brings your home’s electrical system up to date, making it more efficient and reliable. In simpler terms, upgrading your electrical system involves replacing old or faulty components with newer, safer, and more efficient ones, which can help prevent electrical hazards and improve the overall performance of your electrical system.
3. Load Calculation: Determine your home’s electrical load requirements to ensure your system can safely handle the demand. This involves calculating the total wattage of all home appliances, lighting, and other electrical devices. For example, if you have a 100-watt light bulb and a 500-watt television, your total load is 600 watts. As homeowners will likely increase the number of electrical appliances, ensuring your system can handle this demand is essential. This step helps you understand how much electricity your home uses and whether your electrical system can handle it without overloading.
4. Outlet Installation: Install additional outlets where needed to reduce the use of extension cords and power strips. These can pose fire hazards if overloaded, as they are designed to handle a different load than a permanent outlet. By installing more outlets, you can distribute the electrical load more evenly and reduce the risk of overloading. This step is crucial if you use multiple extension cords or power strips in a single outlet, as this can lead to overheating and potentially cause a fire.
5. Lighting: Consider energy-efficient lighting options such as LED bulbs, which consume less power and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. Install dimmer switches for flexibility and to save energy.
6. Safety Measures: Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in appropriate areas of your home. These devices are crucial for early detection of potential fire or gas leak hazards, ensuring the safety of your family and property. Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed. Consider installing whole-house surge protectors to safeguard your electronics from power surges, preventing damage and extending their lifespan.
7. Smart Home Integration: Explore smart home technology to monitor and control your electrical usage more efficiently. Smart thermostats, lighting controls, and power monitoring systems can help you optimize energy usage and save money. In simpler terms, these technologies allow you to control and monitor your home’s electrical usage from your smartphone or computer, helping you to identify areas where you can reduce energy consumption and save on your electricity bills.
8. Outdoor Electrical Needs: If you have outdoor spaces like a patio or garden, ensure they are equipped adequately with outdoor-rated outlets and lighting fixtures. Consider installing an RCD (Residual Circuit Device) to prevent electric shocks in wet environments.
9. Electrical Code Compliance: Ensure all electrical work complies with local building codes and regulations. Hiring a licensed electrician ensures your installation meets safety standards and is up to code.
Schedule periodic inspections and maintenance for your electrical system. This proactive approach is critical to catching any issues early and preventing potential hazards. By replacing worn-out components and promptly addressing any signs of electrical problems, you are taking responsibility for the safety and efficiency of your home’s electrical system. This sense of responsibility can make you feel more secure and confident in your actions, knowing that you are actively maintaining the safety and efficiency of your electrical system.
Following these steps and consulting with professionals when needed can make your home’s electrical installation safer, more efficient, and better suited to your needs. If you’re ready to take the next step in ensuring the safety and efficiency of your home’s electrical system, contact us today for a consultation.
How To Avoid Potential Fire Hazards With a Professional Inspection
You own a multi-family, and that makes you responsible for many lives. This responsibility needs to be taken seriously, especially regarding fire code and fire safety. It is time to rely on the experts. The Singapore Civil Defence Force analyzes fire events for trends and patterns, allowing professionals to try to prevent future similar incidents from happening.
Scenario
Roderico lives in a three-story terrace apartment house. One day he went to work following his usual routine. At the end of his shift, he returned home, planning to make his and his fiance’s dinner. While cooking, the power went off (tripped) due to the number of appliances he used in the kitchen.
After resetting the power, he dined with his lady, and they sat down to enjoy a quiet evening at home. Suddenly, he noticed smoke coming out of the second-story level of the three-story apartment, and it quickly became apparent that there was a fire!
Causes of
Fire Origination
Fire damage was most severe in the master bedroom, while other areas of the second-story apartment sustained heat, smoke, and water damage. Upon inspection of the master bedroom, the burn patterns near the windows, where the computer table had been, were consistent with a first starting near a portable socket outlet recovered from the suspected area of origin.
After speaking with Roderico, it was ascertained that the portable socket outlet had been purchased from an overseas vendor. The result was a determination of accidental fire, of electrical origin, specifically at the location of the portable socket outlet.
Lessons Learned
When tragic events like this occur, there is an analysis of trends that lead to change. A professional fire inspection can help you ensure that your apartment building is as safe as can be given their analysis at that time.
Never overload electrical outlets and circuits
Overloading an outlet or circuit can cause overheating and damage your wiring, leading to a fire. If you have more appliances plugged into one outlet than it’s rated for, get an electrician to install an outlet with a higher capacity.
Don’t use extension cords as permanent wiring solutions
Extension cords are meant as temporary solutions — they should never be used as permanent wiring solutions because they can overheat, leading to fires. Use only UL-listed extension cords and ensure adequate insulation, so they don’t overheat when used for too long or in high-traffic areas.
Check the condition of the wiring regularly
Ensure that any wires that aren’t in use are tightly wrapped and protected from heat sources. Check for exposed wires, loose connections, and faulty wiring to avoid potential electrical fires.
Avoid running wires under carpets or mats
This is one of the most common causes of fires in homes. If you have a cord plugged into an outlet, make sure it isn’t running under rugs or mats where it could be damaged or exposed to moisture.
Use plugs only with Singapore Safety Mark
Many people don’t realize that many of the plugs in their homes aren’t safe for use with Singapore electricity. If you plug one of these into an outlet, you risk getting an electric shock or starting a fire — not something anyone wants! In Singapore, you should only use plugs with the Singapore Safety Mark.

Competent Electrician Interview with Owner
The owner contacted the Competent Electrician in mid of March 2022. The owner wanted a fitness test done for the house he stays. He is worried about the safety of electrical work. He started to google for an electrician online. He came across the Competent Electrician reading the review and called the competent Electrician.
Senior Electrician Jason assigned Senior Electrician Jason wall called to attend. Jason found an incompliance electrical socket tapping power from the water heater switch. He also discovers more than 3-4 electrical safety violations.
Electrician Jason visually inspected the distribution box. he found the electrical distribution looked old. It Has more than one brand of the circuit breaker. The left first single-pole Miniature circuit breaker has two outgoing cables. It is dangerous to have two circuits connected to the circuit breaker. It could have wrongly energised the circuit, and electrocution could occur.
During the actual work, the electrical team led by Jason and Licensed electrician Mr Wong discovered more hidden issues done by an errant contractor. They try to cut costs by rewiring the additional socket outlet with smaller wire size. The initial design electrical circuit is to have a protection twenty-ampere protection. The smaller cable will heat up quickly During a high electrical load situation (for example, using a hairdryer). Insulation of the wire deteriorates very quickly. Resultant is quite similar to the case here: Elderly couple, son in Jurong flat electrocuted to death after cables in plug for water heater fused together
Add three Power circuits to the electrical distribution for the kitchen and office. Current, the system uses one circuit for the kitchen and office. During the previous upgrade, Home Improvement Programme (HIP) contractor usually tapped onto the one circuit in the kitchen. The newly added room shares the old kitchen and the bedroom electrical circuit. It helps the Kitchen area and the workspace area to have a proper distribution.
